The enteric nervous system — the vast neural network embedded in the gastrointestinal wall — contains approximately 500 million neurons organized into two continuous nerve plexuses spanning the full length of the digestive tract. Communication between the gut and brain runs through the vagus nerve, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and the enteric immune system — and it is bidirectional. When the Axis Breaks Down
